WHAT NAVY SEALs REALLY WEAR (hint: they don't wear Luminox)

Avast, me mateys, I have bad news:

The U.S. Navy SEALs don’t wear Luminox watches. Sure, sure, you’ve read statements to that effect on the internet, before. There have been hints and allegations, but now you have 100% proof (of a very small sized sample) that they don’t wear Luminox.  How do I know what kinds of watches the SEALs wear?
Mind you, it’s all very hush-hush. I can’t tell you too much, but here’s what I can tell you:

Several weeks ago, my boss asked me into his office. He got up, closed the door and told me about a training exercise that we would be participating in with the cops.

And the U.S. Navy.

When he specified “the U.S. Navy” I smiled. Who else’s navy would our local police department go out and play “cops and robbers” with?

So, the scenario was this: the cops would be “the good guys” while “the U.S. Navy” would be “the bad guys”. I smiled a second time. The only navy guys I could think qualified to take part in this type of training would be the SEALs.

Excellent.

Okay, fast forward to two weekends ago. I arrive in the port at 2100 (9:00 p.m. to you civilians). In the spirit of Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, and Frank Military (a writer on NCIS—his real name), their small, powerful boat is moored in an anonymous part of the harbor—not at the navy base.  A bunch of guys in camo fatigues are standing around. Yes, they were wearing those cool fatigues that they wore in “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Captain Phillips”.

Okay, so here’s the long and the short of it: most of them wore digital watches, while one of them wore some kind of gigantic Swiss watch that his rich dad the lawyer must have bought him.  It was either a Hublot or an Audemar Piguet. It was so big and bling-bling, that at first I was horrified that he was wearing an Invicta (shudder), until I got a better look at it.  Then there was the one SEAL who was my hero:

He was wearing a Citizen Autozilla.

This is Ranger 425's watch, not the one I saw on the fast boat.

I was going to wear my Doxa 600T (My love-hate relationship with that watch continues. I wear it to work several days a week). I was denifitely not going to wear either of my Luminoxes. I wasn’t going to have the SEALs look at my wrist, and refuse to let me board their boat.

And now, for the good news: several of the cops wore Luminoxes. I'm sure that all that tritium was useful when we got off the boat at 0200 (2:00 in the morning, for you civilians), and drove home.

  1. Are you ignorant? I've been in the navy for 9 years and I am a L.T. I've never seen any U.S Navy Seals participating in any type of scenarios involving law inforcement, this includes both local, state, and federal officers. However there are few exceptions to the rules for which training exercises are manipulated to fit that of a certain unit. But never will you catch a deal team participating in any training exercises with city, state, or federal cops. It Don't Happen. And for your information, 68% of special operations units in the U.S mostly wear G-Shock watches.

    Have a nice day.

    1. Sorry L.T., SEALs and other special ops units do participate in civilian drills, and they teach and train. This change came about after 9-11. How do I know? I'm the PhD that tells you how to fight and writes those wonderful field manuals you all are supposed to but don't go by. You see, even officers are grunts...

    2. "Field manuals" hahaha. Your mom is a field manual.

    3. Hi,
I have been unable to log into my own blog to write new posts for over a year (probably two). I apologize for not noticing your response, and not replying a long time. Ago. Two comments: (1) I did in fact state that most of the guys from your side were wearing digital watches (including, but not limited to G Shock). (2) The training exercise did in fact happen, and happens once in a while. Let's figure out a way to talk where you can verify that I'm not making stuff up, and I can verify your identity, too. I'll try by going to your blog. If not, email me at thomas_miko@homtail.com

    4. I’m gonna hazard a guess and bet that PhD guy isn’t a PhD guy and doesn’t write field manuals, seeing as how field manuals aren’t written by PhD guys. And PhD guys bragging about how they tell grunts how to fight and don’t back it up with anything? And seemingly can’t spell the word “the” in their name? Sorry PhD, but I’m the CTM2(SW/AW) calling you out on your shit. That’s how I know.

    5. Thomas HuntLuck: FYI Real Lieutenants in the Navy or any other services don't abbreviate their rank "L.T." its abbreviated "LT". So you full of shit...whoever you are.

  5. So Mr."...never will you catch a deal team participating in any training exercises with city, state, or federal cops. It Don't Happen..." I've got three words for you Sir.

    Operation Jade Helm

Hardly the first of its kind and doubtfully the last . . . and No, I don't wear a Luminox either.

  7. I've deployed with SEAL operators and facilitated work with JSOC back home. First, the type of watch a SEAL wears downrange varies by Team and personal preference. For my deployment, the whole Team was issued G-Shock watches. Some still wore Suunto, regardless. Zero operators wore Luminox, Rolex or anything fancy. There was one exception, but it was so unique I'll avoid describing it to preserve anonymity. Second, operators definitely participate in domestic security operations, often "red teaming" against the local LEOs so they can test their readiness and response capabilities.

  10. I usually just wear the 6600. Hate it, but...roll w/ the pack or get left behind. Love Luminox, but they're too expensive to keep replacing. I wear a Fossil I got for my anniversary off duty.
